Twenty-something Jane finds a large sum of money in a thermos she bought at a yard sale from 80-year-old Sadie. When she tries to return it, a surprising friendship develops between the two women. When Sadie learns Jane makes a living from porn, she tries to rescue her, but Sadie also has secrets. As with all his films, in Starlet, Sean Baker explores the backyard of Americana, drawing kindness and redemption from it. Without judgment, and with deep understanding of his characters who navigate the less-accepted places of life, the film offers a beautiful and delicate portrait of human friendship between two women. The Jury Prize at the 2012 Locarno Film Festival is the highest of the many accolades the film has received.
