Saori is raising her son Minato alone. When he comes home from school and complains about things one of a teacher said to him, she confronts the school principal and demands answers. This incident starts a chain of events until we discover what happened. Kore-eda, perhaps the greatest cinematic poet of the family drama, does something rare in his cinema here and tells the story from three points-of-views. This Rashômonian approach allows him and us to walk in the shoes of the various protagonists, understand the events in different ways and finally - as always with Kore-eda - the unearthing of the truth leads to emotional clarity, to a moment of human enlightenment.
