The Illusion

In 1860, Garibaldi's Expedition of the Thousand sets out to conquer Sicily and unify Italy. Colonel Orsini, Garibaldi's senior officer, struggles to understand the Sicilians and uses all his life wisdom to navigate the situation. When Garibaldi sends him on a suicide mission, Orsini will resort to any means necessary to survive. Roberto Andò revisits one of the most significant events in Italian history. It could have been a dull historical film, but with a standout performance by Toni Servillo in the lead role, strong narrative momentum, and an exploration of the role of coincidence in shaping history, the result is a highly enjoyable cinematic epic.
