The Gleaners and I

France 2000 | 82 minutes | French | Hebrew subtitles

For months on end, Agnès Varda wandered through the streets and countryside of France, equipped with a digital camera and a small film crew. The subject of her film: gleaners—those who spend their lives collecting, searching for treasures in potato fields and junkyards. For some, it is an ideological act, a protest against the waste of resources. The film is a personal essay in which the filmmaker sees herself as one of these gleaners, her treasures being cinematic stories and images.
