Maintenance Artist is the first feature documentary about pioneering public artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles, the New York City Sanitation Department’s official artist-in-residence. After becoming a mother, Ukeles declared that her household and childcare work would be performance art—a radical act that brought her into the male-dominated 1960s avant-garde. Guided by her Jewish faith, which finds sanctity in the profane, she expanded her practice to include museum workers and, later, sanitation workers. Set amid the social and artistic revolutions of the late 20th century, Maintenance Artist tells the story of an artist who redefined the meaning of art and labor.
