In 1858, in Bologna's Jewish quarter, papal soldiers burst into the home of the Mortara family. They arrived upon the orders from the Cardinal to take seven-year-old Edgardo. Years earlier, Edgardo's nanny had baptized him as an infant without his family's knowledge, and it was now decreed that he should receive a Catholic education. His desperate parents rallied public opinion and the global Jewish community in their fight to take back their son, but the Church was prepared for a fight. The new film by award-winning Italian director Marco Bellocchio is based on a true story. This fascinating historical drama, which stirred controversy in Italy upon release, was featured at the Cannes Festival, 2023.
