Irish Film Week 2022

The Embassy of Ireland is pleased to present, once again, some examples of the best of new Irish film.

Apart from one (Arracht, “Monster”) set in the period of Ireland’s Great Famine in the mid-19th century, the action of all five films takes place in the present day. They provide a varied, and hopefully both exciting and entertaining, insight into life in Ireland, and not only in Ireland: Death of a Ladies’ Man, which prominently features the music of Leonard Cohen, tells the story of Samuel O’Shea (played by Gabriel Byrne), a professor living in Canada who has some interesting hallucinations and regular conversations with his dead Irish-born father. Who We Love is a story of coming of age and coming to terms with one’s identity, while Redemption of a Rogue is a black comedy about a prodigal son returning to his hometown to seek salvation for his sins. Like Arracht, Doineann (“Storm”) is in the Irish language and showcases the wild scenery of Ireland’s coast, as well as containing some interesting and surprising twists.

We hope that you enjoy the films, and look forward to your reactions on Twitter @EmbassyTLV.

A television producer whose family has disappeared enlists the help of a retired police officer to solve this mystery. With plot twists that create an intriguing detective tale and tremendous performances, the film will leave you with heart palpitations.

Arracht (Monster)

Dir: Tom Sullivan
| 90 minutes

On the backdrop of The Great Famine, a fisherman, accused of murdering his British landlord, flees his home and mourns the death of his wife and son. A chance encounter with a sickly girl will give him a chance for atonement.

Death of a Ladies' Man

Dir.: Matthew Bissonnette
| 100 minutes

A poetry professor, who sees things to the songs of Leonard Cohen, meets a young woman that will change his perspective on life. With a Leonard Cohen soundtrack and a superb performance by Gabriel Byrne, the film presents a compassionate look at the male psyche.

Redemption of a Rogue

Dir: Philip Doherty
| 95 minutes

Jimmy retunes to his hometown seeking reconciliation with his dying father. To his surprise, his father has requested to be buried on a dry day, but there is no sign of the rain abating, and Jimmy embarks on an existential journey to make amends.

Who We Love

Dir: Graham Cantwell
| 92 minutes

Summer is the time for first loves, but the halls of high school are a completely different territory to navigate. With her best friend by her side, Lily navigates through treacherous school life. A modern coming-of-age film – bright, quick-paced, cultural references.
