The Banshees of Inisherin

Ireland 2022 | 114 minutes | English | Hebrew subtitles

1923. While civil war rages through Ireland, on the island of Inisherin, life has a different pace. The biggest drama in Padraic's, the local loser, life begins when his closest friend Colm severs their connection. The more Frederic tries to comprehend and get closer, the more a rivalry which escalates in unexpected directions forms. The Banshees of Inisherin is one of the most remarkable films of the past year, a drama that explores friendship, loyalty, and primarily how the male ego is responsible for the ills of the world. McDonagh's brilliant writing articulates these insights with a combination of horror and humor, and the cinematography and locations offer a similar degree of beauty and despair. However, the core power of the film comes from the presence of the excellent ensemble that brings to the screen characters that are human and archetypal in equal measure. In short, this is one of those cinematic events that evoke the mind and heart.
