In 1971, when the U.S. was steeped in turmoil, Clifford Irving, an unsuccessful writer, convinces his publisher to buy a fake biography of eccentric billionaire recluse Howard Hughes. With the help of his friend Dick Suskind, Irving conducts research, stumbles upon a manuscript written by a long-time Hughes associate, and exploits corporate greed. Lasse Hallström’s excellent new film (The Cider House Rules, Casanova) is based on the book Irving wrote after he was released from jail.
