Bresson's first film in color and the first to be set in contemporary times. A young orphaned woman marries an older man, but her curiosity, joie de vivre, and need for love are frustrated by her husband's opacity and cynicism, as well as by his obsession with work and social advancement. The film is an adaptation of a novella by Dostoevsky.
