The yearly trek of the Yak herds through the steep slopes and snowy mountains of Tibet provides fertile ground for a story of the rivalry between an old man and a young man, between tradition and modernity. In his first feature film - an Asian "Western" more than reminiscent of Howard Hawks' "Red River" - documentary filmmaker Eric Valli pays equal attention to his characters as he does to the breathtaking Tibetan landscapes. The film received praise all around the world and was nominated for the Oscar for best foreign language film.
