“The film that you are about to see will surprise you, and it is very likely that the person sitting next to you will understand the events on the screen completely differently.” With this title opens the cinematic hallucination written by Alain Robbe-Grillet and directed by Alain Resnais. The film follows three main characters. X is a man trying to convince A that their current meeting is connected to a previous meeting between them. M is also in love with A. Alain Resnais attempts to illustrate the central theme of all his films - human memory - by filming physical reality as if it were spiritual. He and Robbe-Grillet encourage the viewer to participate in their game — to go out and search for a truth that lies beyond the individual framework. In doing so, they compel us to construct the logic of the plot ourselves and to find the beginning, middle, and end of the film.
