Three men – a former convict, a fugitive, and a bitter alcoholic – plan a perfect jewelry heist. Their fate depends upon an uncompromising police superintendent who believes there is an element of ‘guilt’ in everyone. The whiz of gangster films, Jean-Pierre Melville, is loyal to his minimalistic style, and although produced 50 years ago, this exemplary Parisian Western – an electrifying, yet subtle, philosophical allegory – is more invigorating than most contemporary commercial productions.
