Steve Zissou is in a crisis. His underwater documentaries don't interest anyone and his career is on the decline. His boat, the "Belafonte" is in bad shape, and his only chance for a new breakthrough is to make a hit film about the shark who killed his partner. Along with his ragtag film crew, Steve heads out to track down the killer shark who may have been no more than a figment of his imagination.
