Award-winning co-directors Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine’s documentary film explores the life of one of the greatest musicians of all time as seen through the prism of his internationally renowned hymn, Hallelujah. The directors touch upon Cohen’s long, winding career, but a large portion of the film is dedicated to the dramatic journey of the titular song, from its rejection by the record label to its arrival at the top of the charts, interspersed with interviews with artists for whom Hallelujah is a personal touchstone. The Canadian musician had given his blessing to the production of the film in 2014, which granted the filmmakers extensive access to his private archives and never-before-seen material, including Cohen’s personal notebooks, photographs, performance footage, and extremely rare audio recordings. “There is a religious Hallelujah, but there are many other ones. When one looks at the world, there's only one thing to say, and it's Hallelujah. That's the way it is.” (Leonard Cohen)
