Marine soldiers that returned from captivity in Korea suffer from nightmares. One of them is the son of an ambitious political activist, whose plans for her son gradually become clear. Against the backdrop of the Cold War and McCarthyism, The Manchurian Candidate is one of the pinnacles of political anxiety of the 1960s. John Frankenheimer cleverly uses cinematic means (timeline fluctuations, gaps in information, etc.) to form the paranoid dimension and utilizes the tremendous performances to bestow the plot a human dimension. This is truly a classic work that, from the distance of time, one can fully appreciate its quality and admire the way captured the spirit of its time and remains relevant and thought-provoking.
