Following her husband's death and on the advice of a fortune-teller, Grandma Wong takes the bus from Brooklyn to Connecticut to gamble on all her savings. Without revealing too much of the plot, Grandma returns home with a bag full of cash and the Chinese mob on her trail. Now she will need the protection of the opposite gang in the form of a huge bodyguard with a heart of gold. There are not many roles for older women, but Lucky Grandma is one of the best we have seen in years: a determined protagonist, with a cigarette dangling from her lips and a sour look upon her face, she does not hesitate to do everything to maintain her independence. What begins as a dark comedy with dry humor, transforms into a richer and more human story, with lonesomeness and melancholy lurking beneath its humor. The result is a film you will not soon forget – fun, thrilling, and heartfelt.
