A conservative Congresswoman arrives at the ruins of Berlin after the Second World War, and attempts to expose corruption among US troops spending time at local cabarets and actively participating in the black market. The only person she trusts is an American captain, but it turns out that he is not merely involved in the black market, but even has a German lover who is the former mistress of a wanted Nazi criminal… In contrast to other Hollywood movies of the period, Billy Wilder avoids painting a black and white picture of the situation and presents a stylistically complex film, which brings together neo-realistic influences and typical expressionist and film noir elements.
