Talking About Barbie

Barbie is this summer's biggest hit, and one of the most prominent blockbusters of the current century. It is a colorful, delightful, and elegant film, with a sophisticated plot structure and a rich and dazzling design. Ahead of the film's release, Greta Gerwig created a watch list for the online film magazine Letterbox, which includes 33 cinematic works that influenced the film. influential films. Gerwig's choices focus mainly on the sources of inspiration for the design of shots, scenes, sets, dialogues, etc. (She hardly touches upon the design of the relationship between Barbie and Ken, or on the influences over the film's brilliant plot).

You can go through the list of films chosen by Greta Gerwig here>>>

And watch an interview with her about the reasons for the choice here>>>

From this huge list we have selected six films and will screen five.

The Truman Show - which influenced the design of Barbieland
Cherbourg Umbrellas - about the colors, and the tension between a dramatic plot and a lively design
His Girl Friday - thanks to the quick and venomous dialogues
An American in Paris - for the influence of dance as an expression of emotion and beauty
Saturday Night Fever - inspiring the design of Ken
Playtime - for designing the real world. Unfortunately we were unable to locate this film. We will try to fill in the gap and bring Jacques Tati's films in the future.

The Truman Show

Dir.: Peter Weir

Truman Burbank's life turns upside-down when he discovers that his whole existence is nothing but a scripted television show. A delightful and complete film that boasts an exceptional Jim Carrey and a brilliant script. In short, this is a masterpiece not to be missed.

Cherbourg Umbrellas

Dir.: Jacques Demy
| 92 minutes

A beautiful, melancholy love story set to music by Michel Legrand. Jacques Demy’s film is a story about the nature of romantic fantasy and role playing games that take place within it.

An American in Paris

Dir.: Vincente Minnelli
| 117 minutes

A former American soldier settles in Paris, where he meets a wealthy woman, but falls for a young Parisienne with a penny to her name. The film, with its memorable final scene, color, movement, sound, Minnelli's direction, and Kelly's presence, brought the musical genre into new heights.

His Girl Friday

Dir.: Howard Hawks
| 92 minutes

A seasoned journalist announces to her former boss (and lover) that she intends to marry. He will do anything to thwart her plot and keep her at his side, professionally and romantically. Grant and Russell are simply exquisite

Saturday Night Fever

Dir.: John Badham
| 118 minutes

An Italian-American young man aspires to get out of his depressing life path. He has a talent for disco dancing, moving in a way that captures the eye and the heart. With the hit Bee Gees soundtrack and John Travolta's magnetic presence, Saturday Night Fever has become a cult film.
