Gone with the Wind: The Exhibition
Exhibition: Gone with the Wind

The Jerusalem Film Center is delighted to celebrate its 50th anniversary with an exclusive exhibition featuring original sketches, storyboards, and costume designs from the iconic film Gone with the Wind (Victor Flemimg, 1939). Donated anonymously by art collectors affiliated with the film, these invaluable works were first displayed at the 1989 Jerusalem Film Festival and have since undergone a full process of restoration and conservation.

The exhibition highlights memorable scenes and locations, such as the burning of Atlanta, Tara Mansion, and Twelve Oaks Mansion, along with costume sketches by the film’s design team, including Walter Plunkett (costume designer), William Cameron Menzies (production designer), and H. Richmonds.

Producer David O. Selznick emphasized authenticity in the designs, resulting in 5,500 costume sketches, from which 5,000 pieces were created, and 3,000 stage designs, out of which 90 were built.

The centerpiece of the exhibition features 12 original sketches by legendary costume designer, Walter Plunkett. Each drawing is a masterpiece, rich in detail and symbolism that helped shape the film’s iconic characters. Among the works are ball gowns, suits, everyday wear, and lingerie. The captions next to each work feature the original descriptions from the sketches, usually found on the back.

These works have been meticulously conserved to restore them to their original condition, including cleaning, repairing tears, and strengthening the frames. The result is a vivid glimpse into the craftsmanship behind the film, inviting visitors to celebrate the brilliant creators who brought this cinematic masterpiece to life.
