Chile, 1973, on the backdrop of the political unrest surrounding the presidency of socialist Salvador Allende.The director of a church-run private school decides to give full scholarships to a number of poor children. Despite peer pressure, Gonzalo, the son of a rich family, befriends one of the new students, Pedro Machuca.Their bold friendship grows, until the political and economic rifts dividing the country make their way into the school.
