Ana, the daughter of Mexican immigrants living in East L.A., is in the summer after high school. She is very bright and wants to go to college, and everyone is in favor except for her mother, who thinks that Ana should be a seamstress like her older sister. Ana spends the summer working in the sweatshop run by her sister and gets a taste of the economic disparity that exists in America. Focusing only subtly on social issues, the film's true focal point is the relationship between Ana and her overly critical mother. As we watch Ana blossom into maturity, awareness, and love, it is clear how much affection both the director and the lead actress have for the film's heroine.
