Punktchen and Anton

West Germany 1953 | 91 minutes | German | Hebrew subtitles

Punktchen lives with her wealthy parents in a spacious house with a nanny and a cook. Anton lives with his sick mother and has to help support the family. They meet at night when Punktchen's governess takes her to collect alms to pay her dubious partner. Thomas Engel presents this adaptation of the beloved Erich Kästner children's book. Since this is a German-Austrian co-production, the story moved to Vienna, but beyond that Kästner's witty tone and friendly sensibility were preserved. The cinematography, editing, and acting are all precise - that is, they manage to create a pleasant illusion. The result is exceptional, even 80 years on.
