In the last weeks of WWII, Cesira, a young shopkeeper's widow, decides to leave bombed Rome with her 13-year-old daughter Rosetta and return to her home village. At the end of a rather entertaining journey, she reaches her destination, but the war is approaching the village and the journey the two make back to Rome is far less amusing... The result is an excellent period drama, but in light of recent events, some of the images in the film may be triggering.
