Michael Blakemore transports Uncle Vanya to a decaying ranch in 1919 Australia, and creates a film of charm and visual splendor. As in Anton Chekhov's play, the film centers on a young woman and her uncle, who quietly run a family estate while her father establishes his intellectual reputation in the city.
