Repentance

USSR 1986 | 153 minutes | Russian | Hebrew subtitles

The mayor of a provincial Georgian town dies and is laid to rest in a respectful burial ceremony. But someone refuses to let the dead man rest in peace, and his body is removed again and again from its grave. When the grave-emptyer is discovered and put on trial, the cruelty and brutality of the dead mayor are exposed. A film which speaks out against terror and brutality, Repentance is seen by many as a direct reference to Stalin, and by some as the most important Soviet film since Eisenstein's.
