Amália – The Voices of Fado

Portugal 2017 | 84 minutes | Portuguese | Hebrew, English subtitles

Fado is destiny, hope, life and death. It’s not just music, but an integral part of the fabric of life in Lisbon, Portugal. Fado is practically the soundtrack to that city, and it is the main reason for the national pride expressed by the participants in this beautiful film. Fado’s roots can be traced back to the early 19th century, but some historians say the soulful music likely originated much earlier. Fado is the result of a love triangle between Brazil, Africa and Portugal, one singer explains. It is, indeed, music that is full of emotion, spans generations, unites families and tribes, young and old. The film goes from musician to musician, from restaurants to clubs where Fado is performed, and presents a rich array of the music in modern-day Lisbon.
