A Visitor from the Living

France 1999 | 65 minutes | French | Hebrew, English subtitles

An unrelenting interview conducted by Claude Lanzmann in 1979 with Maurice Rossel, who worked for the International Red Cross and served in Berlin during the war. Speaking comfortably from his home in Switzerland, Rossel recalls his experiences. Though he recognizes how young and naïve he was, he still refuses to acknowledge the realities of Theresienstadt—or his role in enabling the Nazis’ carefully staged farce. In the style of Shoah, Lanzmann leads the viewer to chilling conclusions.
