Neshoma

Netherlands 2024 | 87 minutes | Dutch | Hebrew, English subtitles

Neshoma brings prewar Jewish Amsterdam to life through the fictional story of Rusha, a 17-year-old girl living in the city’s Jewish quarter. Told through her letters to her brother in the Dutch East Indies and paired with archival footage, the film offers a vivid, personal view of Jewish life during the interwar period. As Rusha comes of age, she navigates between her father’s socialist ideals and her husband’s religious beliefs. When WW2 breaks out, she is faced with an impossible choice. Blending fiction and documentary, the film is inspired by testimonies from Amsterdam’s Jewish community about life before WW2.
