Mundurukuyü – The Forest of the Fish Women

Brazil 2025 | 72 minutes | Munduruku, Portuguese | Hebrew subtitles

Ethnographic cinema, like traditional academic research, has often been created by outsiders rather than by members of the communities portrayed. However, a shift is underway: those who were once subjects are now telling their own stories. This film, made by three young women living along the Tapajós River in northern Brazil, follows their journey, cameras on hand, as they collect, convey, and preserve the Munduruku people's mythology. This folklore reveals fluid and entangled relationships among the human and the non human relationships that stand in stark contrast to the aggressive deforestation and mining threatening their environment.
