World War II. We follow two Czechs who enlist in the British Air Force and take part in bombing missions over Europe. “The Student” finds a match with a local girl, while his comrade Shorty struggles more with the English temperament. As the war progresses, they face increasing challenges—both on the ground and in the skies. Based on the autobiography by Filip Jánský, this war film depicts the battle for Europe without pathos or kitsch. It blends tension, romance, humor, and a toughness born from the immediate confrontation with death. Cinematographer Jan Němeček integrates archival WWII footage, creating a powerful sense of authenticity, while the final scenes deliver a uniquely Czech irony that gradually loses its smile.
