In 1990, a massive starship carrying an alien population appeared over Johannesburg, South Africa. Today, the refugee camp where the aliens are held has deteriorated into a militarized ghetto known as District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. When the aliens are scheduled to be relocated, the man in charge of the operation, Wikus Van De Merwe, is exposed to a mysterious alien chemical. Now, he must rely on the help of his alien allies to survive. A sci-fi thriller with clever allegorical undertones.
