Hungary, the 1990s. After the collapse of the communist bloc and the opening of borders, the desire to travel across Europe grows. Train tickets are expensive, so the film's protagonists find a way to grant themselves—and the young people of Hungary—freedom by forging train tickets. Like Waltz with Bashir and others, Pelikan Blue is a type of animated documentary. The film features stylish animation, vibrant visuals, and a mix of humor and somber moments, all of which come together to create an allegory about the struggle for freedom and democracy. It reflects on a time when a tyrannical government sought to suppress freedom and the creative ways in which people will always fight for liberty.
