A real estate agent leaves his beautiful wife and travels to the Carpathian Mountains to finalize a deal. The castle belongs to the vampire Nosferatu, who later follows the German agent back to the city of Bremen, bringing with him a plague of rats. Dracula, the novel by Bram Stoker that inspired Murnau—one of the greatest film directors—fits well within the tradition of German cinema at the time. As in other expressionist films, the actors wear heavy makeup, but Murnau often incorporates exterior shots, and the settings have a more realistic quality. The resulat is a brilliantly eerie and imaginative vampire film.
