A Wedding

USA 1977 | 125 minutes | English | Hebrew subtitles

The groom comes from old money, the bride from a self-made truck dealer. With rumors of mafia ties surrounding the groom’s immigrant father, the guests are wary. But that’s just the beginning. With dozens of characters, conflicts, and family secrets, Altman effortlessly weaves together a complex narrative. As always, he uses sharp dialogue, multiple storylines, and his signature ironic distance—never too much, never too little. In the end, the film offers a skeptical, perhaps even despairing view of the forces shaping his characters (and us). Though less known in Altman’s impressive body of work, A Wedding marks a fitting conclusion to his 1970s golden era.
