Touki Bouki (The Hyena’s Journey)

Senegal 1973 | 85 minutes | French, English, Arabic, Wolof | Hebrew subtitles

Mori, a cowherd, and Anta, a university student, are desperately saving money to escape their bleak life in Africa and start anew in Paris. Touki Bouki (The Hyena’s Journey), Mambéty’s first feature, is regarded as a milestone in African cinema. With a blend of irony and compassion, Mambéty observes his protagonists and their efforts, which include various acts of deception. He deconstructs the traditional narrative, fluidly navigating between reality and fantasy, good and evil, life and death. The result is a unique and prophetic film that remains relevant and thought-provoking today.
