The director talks to his 70-year-old grandmother, who raised him. She recalls her idealistic childhood in the countryside, adolescence under German occupation, her mother's death, life with her neglectful husband, the four children she lost at birth, and her relationship with Jean and his son Boris. The result is a dual portrait - that of a fascinating, independent, and strong woman, and that of rural, archaic France, a world that is slowly disappearing.
