The Woman Men Yearn For

Germany 1929 | 78 minutes | Silent, German intertitles | Hebrew subtitles

Henry Leblanc, a member of an affluent family in a dire financial crisis, marries a wealthy heiress who will hopefully save the family business. During the honeymoon on a luxury ship, he encounters the mysterious Stascha, who completely captures his heart. Director Kurt Bernhardt saw Dietrich in the theater and decided to cast her in this melodrama, based on a novel by Max Brod. Bernhardt had to convince his producers to hire her since she was unknown. But the result, in which Dietrich became known as the typecast of the femme fatale, paved her way to Hollywood.
