A unique friendship blossoms between a reclusive writer and a young black Bronx student with literary aspirations. Van Sant's film runs in the same territory as his Good Will Hunting, though this time writing takes the place of math. Van Sant deals delicately with his subject, and the chemistry between veteran Connery and newcomer Robert Brown makes for a very heart-warming film.
