Between Revolutions

Maria and Zahra meet in the late 1970s in medical school in Bucharest. But as the Islamic Revolution spreads in Iran, Zahra decides to return home. Floating between hope and disappointment, their correspondence throughout the 1980s, until the end of Ceausescu's regime, reveals their private lives and the situations in both countries. Between Revolutions is created entirely from archival footage used as the backdrop for the letter exchange. It is an exceptional example of the power of archival imagery - intriguing, luminous, and flexible enough to support any narrative, including the one in the film, inspired by letters discovered in the archives of Romania's secret police. This is a captivating and heartfelt work that imaginatively illuminates a historical era that seems vastly far away.
