Weaving together three stories, each constructed from a series of unpredictable dramatic climaxes, Steven Soderbergh makes a statement about drugs and the war on drugs. He gathers a talented cast and takes a distant approach with his camera, giving the film visual and human momentum. His Oscar for best direction was well deserved.
