Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood

USA 2002 | 116 minutes | English | Hebrew subtitles

Sidda is a New York playwright on the verge of success. When she admits in a national newspaper that she had a difficult childhood with an alcoholic mother, her mom, Vivi, an eccentric Southerner drama queen, cuts off the relationship. Vivi's three best friends from childhood (who 60 years earlier formed the Ya Ya Sisterhood) go to New York to bring the prodigal daughter back home to Louisiana. They are convinced that when she hears the truth about her mother, her childhood memories will take on new light... Adapted from the novel by the same name, Callie Khouri's directorial debut (she received the Oscar for the script of Thelma & Louise) is a fine and well-acted melodrama exploring what it is to be a woman in America.
