Taiwan during the traumatic period following the Japanese withdrawal in 1945 – Old man Lin had four sons, the eldest was killed, the second one is missing, the third is mad. The fourth, a deaf and sensitive photographer, is the focus of the film through his friendship with a young radical and his love for the friend’s sister.
