Zatoichi

Japan 2003 | 116 minutes | Japanese | Hebrew, English subtitles

Zatoichi is a well-known character in Japanese cinematic tradition, a blind itinerant massagist who proves to be a virtuosic swordsman and defender of the weak. Takeshi Kitano takes this character and gives him a new face, not without references to Japanese and other cinematic traditions as well as a good dose of humor. The plot focuses on Zatoichi as he comes to the aid of two sisters seeking to avenge the murder of their parents at the hands of a tyrannical mafia ring. With brilliant action scenes, dry humor, signaler characters, and bloodshed alongside naïve gestures, Takashi Kitano presents a witty and delightful work.
