Il Divo

Italy, France 2008 | 117 minutes | Italian | Hebrew subtitles

The divo (in Italian, the male version of a diva) of the film’s title is 90-year-old politician Giulio Andreotti, member of Italian Parliament for the Christian Democrats for over 60 years. He has never feared anyone, neither the Mafia nor the Red Brigades. Power and influence are what he thrives on. It would have been easy to make a caricature out of Andreotti or turn him into the monster of Italian politics of the last generation, but Paolo Sorrentino prefers to portray a complex, human figure and to deploy a rich ensemble of secondary characters.
