Three generations of women live in a small apartment in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi: spitfire grandmother Eka, middle-aged daughter Marina, and intelligent granddaughter Ada. They each endure the difficult political and social problems of the city while Eka's son Otar sends money and letters from Paris. When Marina and Ada discover that he has been killed in an accident, they vow not to tell Eka about it. Eventually, Otar's friend visits and Eka demands to visit her son in Paris.
