Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress

France, China 2002 | 111 minutes | Cantonese | Hebrew subtitles

China, the days of the cultural revolution of the late 1960s. Two youths from "reactionary" families are sent to the hills for re-education as farmers. Their rebellion begins by teaching the locals something about Mozart and ends in a love triangle between the two and a beautiful young girl who they expose to the wonders of French literature. Based on the director's own autobiographical novel, Sijie Dai paints his story and that of the cultural revolution in mature and ironic tones.
