A pleasant comedy about the flexibility of sexual and national identity. The titular Chouchou is a rather effeminate young man in North Africa who decides to leave for the land of Liberté, égalité, fraternité. Posing as a Chilean refugee he finds a place to stay with a tolerant priest and a job working for a pleasant psychologist and then as a drag queen in a night club. Soon enough he also finds a boyfriend, but then the troubles begin... Allouache neutralizes any drop of vulgarity and awkwardness in this fable-like tale, in part thanks to the charming portrayal of the innocent hero.
