Thierry Guetta, an eccentric shop-keeper turned filmmaker, tries to capture the street-art world on camera. He follows the world's most infamous "vandals", accumulating thousands of hours of footage without knowing what to do with it. Meeting world renowned street artist Banksy changes his life forever. Now the camera turns on to the "filmmaker" as he decides to try his hand in art himself. No, he does not have technic, but that doesn't stop him from putting on the most talked about exhibit in L.A. in 2008. Around this plot, some say a total fabrication, Banksy presents another clever work of art dealing with the eternal conflicts of the art world: genuineness vs. fabrication, commercialization vs. asceticism, subversion vs. compliance. The film does not make the decision between the opposites, but by examining them Exit Through the Gift Shop presents the Culture Industry as a playground that contributes to all involved. The result is a must see.
