The camera was the tool through which Edward Curtis studied his immediate surroundings and set out to explore distant environments. He left behind an unprecedented volume of precious documentation: 40,000 photographs of Native Americans from eighty different tribes, 10,000 recordings of music and speech, and one film that has become his heritage.
